The main objective of the Graduate Program in Philosophy at the Universidade Federal do Ceará is to train high-level personnel for the qualified exercise of research and teaching at higher and secondary levels. It intends to become a center of excellence in research in the area of Philosophy from the Northeast region, enabling the academic exchange of our professors and students on a national and international level. In this way, we aim to increase the quality of academic production in the country. Thus, we aim to seriously meet the growing demand that the area has shown in recent years.            The Master's course aims to improve the philosophical and professional competence of graduates, specifically in the Program's research lines. By developing and deepening skills for research and teaching, it also serves as a preparatory phase for the doctorate. The Doctoral course seeks to provide in-depth philosophical training in the Program's lines of research. With this, it aims to develop the capacity for research and philosophical innovation.            In addition to the area of concentration in Philosophy, the Program is articulated around two lines of research: 1) Ethics and Political Philosophy; 2) Philosophy of Language and Knowledge. There is a balance of professors in the research lines, as well as an equitable distribution of students already guaranteed in the student selection. Faculty members have research projects in which their mentees are directly related. These projects are linked to one of the lines of research and are articulated with each other in our labs so that there is interaction between researchers. Here is a summary presentation of our research lines:

1. Ethics and Political Philosophy

Since the early twentieth century, ethical thinking has focused on the problems of semantic foundations, methodological and epistemological: a theoretical set that received from analytical philosophy the denomination of Metaethics. In this context, what is questioned is the very possibility of ethics as a normative theory of action. It is the non-cognitive and emotivist postures that support the thesis that normative propositions have no cognitive content since they are not indeed declarative sentences, therefore, they are neither true nor false. Thus, if normative sentences are neither true nor false, they contain no obligations and cannot be substantiated. Indeed, ethics as a theory of morally correct action is impossible. Given this situation, the central question in ethics concerns the problem of its foundation. Can moral judgments be substantiated? The answers that result from this question demarcate the main guidelines of the contemporary ethical debate: deontological ethics, which, respectively, focus on the analysis of factual judgments and the analysis of value judgments, both implied in human action. From the problem of the validity of the norms that guide human action, it is then possible to ask about the legitimacy of the action and the socio-political institutions. Ideas such as Sovereignty, Representation, Contract, State, Public Opinion, Class, Nation, Civil Society, Political Parties, and so forth are susceptible to profound critical evaluation. From this perspective, the question about the meaning of politics and its legitimacy becomes the main theme of contemporary philosophy. Faced with the threats that result from the current situation of humanity, a political philosophy can be constructed to consider as a reference of its orientation not only local, regional, and national political communities, but human relations in the context of a planetary civilization, as well as the consequences of science intervention in the ecosphere, the biosphere and global markets. This situation confronts humanity with the problem of co-responsibility capable of fostering a cosmopolitan solidary consciousness and which reflects the primacy of politics in the context of a globalized world, which is threatened by an ecological and social collapse. This means thinking of the political as the condition to legitimize the basic normative foundations of the necessary structures for the historical communities distributed over the planet. Currently, in the Ethics and Political Philosophy research line there are 15 active projects that articulate the research of the Program's professors and students:

01)      The connection of theoretical philosophy and practical philosophy in Hegel in the concept of freedom.
02)      Seneca’s philosophy as a therapy for the ills of the soul.
03)      The subjective and social foundation of religion in Ludwig Feuerbach and Karl Marx.

14)     A hermeneutic-pragmatic theory of truth in virtue ethics? A critical study based on Alasdair Macintyre’s moral theory.
15)     Vittorio Possenti and the notion of person in the Brazilian code of medical ethics.

2.  Philosophy of Language and Knowledge

It appears that the stimulus for the consideration of language arose from different issues. In Epistemology, the transcendental critique of Reason was subjected to critique and turned into a “critique of meaning” as a critique of language. The Logic was confronted with the problem of artificial languages and with the analysis of natural languages. Anthropology will consider language a specific product of the human being and thematize the correlation between language form and worldview. Ethics, questioned concerning its rationality, will start from the fundamental distinction between declarative sentences and normative sentences. Thus, under the title Philosophy of Language and Knowledge, we consider the following dimensions: a) the analytical, which deals with the logical-formal and pragmatic aspect of language; b) the historical related to the gestation of meaning, as thematization of the phenomenological and hermeneutic horizon, in which human understanding is located; c) the transcendental dimension that poses the problem of the validity of the gestated meaning and that understands philosophy as a reflection of thought about itself and its presuppositions, which in dialectics is articulated as a theory of first principles. The Philosophy of Language and Knowledge research line has 21 active research projects, which articulate the research of the Program’s professors and students:
01)      Martin Buber’s dialogicity and existentialist psychologies.
02)      The bodily inscription of the spirit according to Merleau-Ponty.
03)      Musical language and philosophical discourse on the arts.
04)      Platonic Metaphysics in the light of Wittgenstein’s grammar.

05)      The issue of subjectivity in the context of a post-transcendental theoretical framework.
06)      The relationship between Consciousness and intentionality and the criterion of the mental.
07)      Antepredicativity.
08)      Foundational Aspects of Information Philosophy.
09)      Self-Cause, Causal Interaction, and Laws of Nature.
